The projections are formed with inwardly sloping surfaces 29, 30, 31, Fig. 3, to define a recess 27 or 28. As described, the tool is a secateurs-like cutter having a blade 13 detachably connected to the handle 1 via a knurled nut 5 adapted to co-operate with a groove 11 formed in an anvil member 9. A retainer member 21 having a resilient arm 22 is mounted adjacent the blade in order to hold the stem or stalk against the anvil during and after cutting a guard lip 26 being provided on the arm; serrations 10 are formed on the anvil to facilitate gripping. Serrations 18 are also formed on the handle 12 for co-operation with a smooth surface on the handle 1, such arrangement acting as a stem crushing device. In a modification, the serrations 18 may be provided on both handles, the serrations being staggered so as not to interengage; alternatively, one set of serrations may be transversely inclined relative to the other set.
