Cultivated grapevines ( V. vinifera L. ssp. sativa) are considered to have been domesticated from wild population of V. vinifera L. ssp. sylvestris. The domestication process involves the selection of hermaphrodite genotypes producing larger and sweeter berries of attractive colors and the development of techniques for their vegetative propagation.
