The Amsterdam Tulip Festival is an annual event that marks the end of winter and celebrates the arrival of spring. Between March and May, this festival transforms the Dutch capital and its surrounding countryside into a dazzling floral display — which is why Amsterdam in springtime is the perfect season to enjoy the city.

The festival takes place at 85 locations across the city and beyond, including public parks, museum gardens, and the famous Keukenhof garden. Known as the Garden of Europe, around 7 million bulbs are planted each year at Keukenhof alone — drawing visitors from around the world.

What is the history of the Tulip Festival?

The Amsterdam Tulip Festival first took place in 1936 — but the Dutch obsession with tulips stretches back much further. Originally from Central Asia, tulips were first introduced to Europe around 1550. In the 17th century, demand for these colorful blooms created a speculative economic bubble known as tulip mania. By 1637, prices were so high that a single bulb could cost more than a town house in Amsterdam.

While the bubble burst, this love of tulips remained. Today, the Netherlands is the world’s leading producer of this flower, and the Amsterdam Tulip Festival has become an annual celebration of this horticultural heritage.

When is the Amsterdam Tulip Festival?

The Amsterdam Tulip Festival takes place each spring, typically from late March to early May. It coincides with the tulip blooming season, which changes slightly each year and usually peaks in April.

The festival takes place at various locations across the city. These include public parks, gardens, and iconic sites such as Vondelpark, Museum Square, and Keukenhof garden. Keukenhof is only open during the blooming season — and the exact dates for 2026 are from 19 March to 20 May. Tickets are limited, so get them in advance.

What else can I do during the Amsterdam Tulip Festival?

Whether you spring in Amsterdam shows the city at its best. Whether you want to explore the vibrant flower markets or delve into the city’s rich culture, here are some of the best experiences to enjoy during the festival.

Experience Amsterdam’s Bloemenmarkt

A row of houses with gabled rooftops, built from red and brown bricks, with the covered roofs of market stalls and a canal in the foreground.

Admire the blooms at Bloemenmarkt, Amsterdam’s historic floating flower market.

If you want to stick with the tulip theme, head to the historic Bloemenmarkt. Set on the Singel canal, Bloemenmarkt is the world's only floating flower market — and has been selling flowers since 1862. Admire the stalls packed with bulbs and freshly-cut flowers.

Address

Singel 630, 600 Amsterdam, Netherlands

Opening hours

Monday-Saturday, 9:00 AM-5:30 PM and Sunday, 11:00 AM-5:30 PM

Take a day trip to Zaanse Schans

Admire the blooms at Zaanse Schans during tulip season.

Windmills are another essential feature of the Dutch countryside. These structures were once used to drain water from low-lying areas — since 26% of the Netherlands is below sea level — which is why you still find mills dotted across the country.

And there’s no better place to see these historic windmills than Zaanse Schans. Set in the town of Zaandam, a short train from the capital, this picturesque neighborhood is one of the most iconic photo spots in the Netherlands. Tulip season is the perfect time to visit, when the surrounding fields are bursting with color.

Visiting Amsterdam in April? Then you won’t want to miss the King’s Day celebrations. On April 27 every year, the city transforms into a sea of orange to mark the birthday of King Willem Alexander.

Revellers take to the streets and the canals to enjoy a city-wide party. Expect canal parades, live music, and pop-up markets. Soak up the city’s vibrant atmosphere as you enjoy a truly local experience.

Enjoy the vivid tulip gardens outside Amsterdam’s famous Rijksmuseum.

During the Amsterdam Tulip Festival, the Rijksmuseum puts on one of the most impressive floral displays in the city. The Rijksmuseum is an essential stop on any Amsterdam itinerary — although it’s worth visiting just to see these colorful blooms. Plan to spend a few hours exploring the museum’s collection of over 8,000 artworks.
