The flower is the reproductive mechanismof most seed-bearing plantsand their function is to carry out the multiple roles of sexual reproduction, seed development, and fruit production. Many plants produce highly visibleflowers that have a distinctive size, colour, and fragrance. Almost everyone is familiar with the beautiful rose flowers, orchids, and tulips. Other plants, such as, oaks, beeches, maples, and grasses have small, green or gray flowers that go unnoticed. Whether eye-catching or inconspicuous, all flowers produce either male or female organs required for reproduction. Botanistscall the cone, bearing plants, 'gymnosperms', which means 'naked seeds'. Flowering plants are termed 'angiosperms', which means 'enclosed seeds'. Most flowers are composed of four parts, arranged in concentric ringsattached to the tip of the stem. The innermostpart is the pistilwhich is mountedon the top of the stamen. This is surrounded by petalsand the sepalsthat form the initial bud, or calyxof the flower.
